What Benefits Are Available
Long-Term Disability Benefits
Long-term disability insurance is typically included as part of a benefits package provided by your employer. It provides financial support when you cannot return to your job after a serious accident or after developing a serious illness.
Benefits are paid out monthly and based on a percentage of your salary. The length of time benefits will be paid can vary from policy to policy. For this reason, it’s important to understand your policy and what recourse you have should benefits stop.
The Pennington Law Firm, LLC, can help you protect your rights to receive the benefits defined in your long-term disability policy. If your insurance claim was denied or you have received a notice that benefits will discontinue, talk to our attorney about your options today.
Benefits Covered By SSDI And SSI
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are federal programs designed to help those in need. If you are approved to receive SSDI or SSI, you can expect the following benefits:
- SSDI: SSDI offers a monthly cash payment based on your average lifetime earnings. Following approval, your first Social Security check will be paid on the sixth full month after you became disabled. You may also be eligible to receive benefits retroactively if you were disabled for more than six months before your first check was issued. You may continue to receive SSDI for as long as you remain disabled.
- SSI: If you receive SSI, you will also be paid monthly, but according to your need instead of your past earnings. Disabled applicants remain eligible to receive benefits until their condition improves enough for them to work, or until they reach retirement age.
SSDI and SSI provide general financial support. You may also be eligible for Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement for medical expenses related to your illness or injury.
